Therapy for South Asian Adults
Therapy for people who carry two worlds.
You may be the dependable one. The one who handles the paperwork, the phone calls, the family decisions, and everyone's expectations, and who is rarely asked what you want.
Maybe you feel guilty for wanting a different life than the one your parents pictured. Maybe you switch between two versions of yourself so smoothly that you've stopped noticing, until you're exhausted. Or you're simply tired of explaining your family to people who don't quite understand.
This is a space where you don't have to translate.
What often brings people here
- Feeling torn between family duty and your own wants
- Caring for aging parents while raising children or building a career
- Knowing your parents sacrificed for you, and feeling that sacrifice in every decision
- Pressure around marriage, partners, in-laws, or having children
- Career choices that everyone seems to have an opinion about
- Grief, for a parent, a relationship, or a home you left
- Never having had words for feelings your family didn't name
What working with me looks like
As a South Asian therapist and a child of immigrants, I understand the context you come from without needing it explained or defended. I don't assume what your culture should mean to you. For some people, the work is moving closer to family. For others it's creating distance, and for many it's both at once.
My approach is psychoanalytic. We look at the patterns underneath, such as the guilt, the old expectations, and the voice that says you're failing someone, and why they hold so much power. The goal is not to choose between your family and yourself, but to understand your own voice well enough to trust it.
I offer sessions in English, Gujarati, and Hindi.
Is this the right fit?
This page is for people who want a therapist who already understands this context. If your background is different, I work with people from many backgrounds, and what matters most is that the work feels right to you.
Questions people often ask
Do I need to be South Asian to work with you?
No. I work with people from all backgrounds. This page is simply for those who want a therapist familiar with this context.
What if my family doesn't know I'm in therapy?
Therapy is confidential, with limited exceptions required by law, which we review together in our first session. If keeping this private from family is part of your situation, we can talk about that too.
Do you take insurance?
I'm in network with several major plans, and I provide a superbill for out-of-network benefits. See Fees & FAQ.
